Portrait of Varun Ramesh Balan

Now building with AI

Varun Ramesh Balan

I report it, write it, edit it, film it, and build the tools that publish it.

I've written about health, technology, history, economics, culture, videogames, business leadership, and geopolitics, and I go into each one as a beginner. I assume nothing. I put the story and its context in the order that I find most interesting. In text, I write features, news reports, and interviews.

Beyond text, I'm a full-stack multimedia producer. I can be behind the camera or in front of it, edit the video, design or help a designer, and build the website. I make basic animations and write the copy. I also have a bespoke editorial illustration workflow, and I've kept a personal meme archive since 2009.

My work appears in Happiest Health, Madras Courier, The Week, and The Hindu.

Also: I build things

I'm a writer who builds software. AI does a lot of the coding, but I steer the harness. I've followed the AI space since 2016, and I've been an early adopter of almost every tool since GPT-3: text to image, text to video, agentic harnesses, and more.

This website

After years of working with tech teams to build and update WordPress, Wix, and Adobe templates, I decided to make my own site with AI. It took several attempts. The result is plain HTML and CSS with no framework, and I add my work through a small app that runs on my own computer.
